A cousin to pimento cheese but without those potentially child-deflecting red peppers, this cream cheese based dip is mild and slightly sweet from a splash of fresh orange juice. Pack it in a lunchbox with celery and crackers for your kids. Or, zip it up with a dash or two of Tabasco and some mashed garlic, spoon it into a bowl surrounded by good potato chips and serve it with co*cktails to the adults. It will keep for at least five days in the fridge.

Preparation

Make the recipe with us

  1. Place the cream cheese, mayonnaise, scallion, salt, pepper (if using) and paprika in a bowl and mix and mash well with a fork or spatula until smooth. Mix in orange juice until smooth, and then mix in the Cheddar. If the dip seems too thick, add a little more juice. Taste for seasoning. You can also mix in a food processor if you like.

big hit with kids!

Made this with lemon juice instead of orange (it's what I had on hand) and extra cheddar (because I wasn't paying attention). My 12 year old tasted it and said it was the best thing he had ever had and I was an amazing cook. Yea! Big impact for minimal effort.

Karen

Orange juice seems odd to me, but I could see grated citrus of any kind, especially lime with the hot sauce.

Cait

I add thick cut crispy bacon, and a mix of jalapeño and Serrano peppers. The OJ is odd, but adds a nice contrast to a smoky bacon and the heat of the peppers. I highly recommend keeping it. I use fresh squeezed tangelos

Anne

Made this last night for a party - it was a hit. Made double recipe - there's was plenty left (6 people at the dinner party). I followed the recipe exactly and added chopped jalapeno. I tasted it without the orange juice and thought it was better with it.

Sarah

If you make this with smoked Gouda instead of some or all of the cheddar, you won’t be sad about it.

Mo

Good. Like others I added a jalapeño. Skipped the OJ — just seemed odd to me. I'll make this again but with more heat and I'll load up on the scallions.

Andrea

This is wonderful. I took other cooks suggestions and added a seeded, finely chopped jalapeño. I don't care for mayo so subbed an equal amount of sour cream. I grated the garlic in - I didn't want to bother to make a paste. I've made it twice in a week. I love that it does not make an excessive amount - it's perfect to have on hand for snacks for a few days running.

Trish

Scallions = green onions, right? (For those of us not on the East Coast)

Lucy

i made it today,we had it with crudités . Everyone liked it. The recipe makes a small amount, you won't have leftovers.

bacongougere

Follow-up: I've made several permutations of this. FYI, charred scallions get totally lost in this. Orange juice in very moderate amounts to loosen it is OK. Trader Joe's pumpernickel pretzel sticks are AMAZING with this. It does not last long in our house.

Mary Ellen

I made this for our knitting group. It was a big hit. Comment was that there was just enough , but not too much heat.

shore cook

Substituted plain yogurt for the mayo for added tang. Added a bit of grated parmesan along with the cheddar. Big hit with all ages, will become a staple in our house.

brenda

Don't like what the mayo offered to the flavor the first time I made it so used sour cream instead. Also usde chives instead of scallion and about 4 drops of hot sauce. Came out awesome!

Scott

I made this with the orange juice, and it was not at all intrusive; don't be scared. I took another's reviewer's advice and added extra green onions. I love onions in any form, but my dip was too onion-y, maybe because I was using large green onions. I also used a large garlic clove because that's what I had, my dip was too garlicky as well; next time I'll use some restraint. I used the sharpest cheddar I could find, and it did not overwhelm at all.

Susie D

Made this 2 days ago as an appetizer for a dinner party last night. Didn't use the orange juice as the texture was perfect as was. Because I waited a day to serve it, the flavours had lots of opportunity to blend so in each bite you could taste the garlic, then the cheese, then the scallion. Served with a Tablas Creek viognier. Mm, mm good!

Patty M

First few bites are good but we quickly tired of this. Will not make again. Used the orange juice and it was good in it.

Loretta

Just finished making this, and I am underwhelmed. I’m hoping a night in the fridge will improve the flavor.

RTHOMPS

This was one of the best dips I’ve ever made. Don’t skip the OJ, you can’t taste it but I feel if you left it out the dip would be missing something. Used the food processor and it made this so easy to whip up. Make a double batch because it will be GONE!

Ellen

Made it exactly as written. Very good, but i do think i'll sub sour cream for mayo next time. the mayo is overpowering (and i love mayo).

Kristin

Everything about this simple dip made me happy. I cannot have cow's milk so I used a mix of chevre, goat cheddar and lamb chopper. I love the orange juice in this. I could eat this every day as a snack.

alexgoes

Amazing.

LisaSC

Just made this for a simple appetizer for turkey day. Used smoked paprika and hot sauce, and sour cream instead of mayo. Left out the garlic this first time in case the onion was potent enough. Used both tablespoons of OJ. It's incredibly delicious, and I'm struggling to save it for tomorrow. I'm expecting it to taste even better after having time for the flavors to blend. Will definitely make it again.

marie

Read scallions, which my brain translated to shallots. One shallot is very good. Two shallots gives it a real bite. Still great on crackers though. Going to have to try SCALLIONS now to see how the recipe really is.

Steve

Made as is and it's outstandingly simple and delicious.

Cassie

Have made this multiple times for parties and always get compliments. Super tasty with veggies, plain chips or pita chips. I always double the recipe to use a whole block of cream cheese and add one garlic clove and small dash of hot sauce.

Crystal

Love this. Am making it multiple times with the block of cheese I bought. I omitted the juice and used smoked paprika (just simply couldn't find sweet). Super snack!

Brenda

I made exactly as written with the exception of lemon juice instead of orange (because that's what I had) and added the optional garlic clove and hot sauce. It's really good.

d unruh

This was overshadowed at super bowl party by far too much other food so I have it as a leftover; however found that it’s great in the morning on toast (or bagel). It’s also a great celery stuffed so am looking forward to a lunch time snack. I only had smoked paprika and it totally worked. Followed recipe other than that. I did use a food processor.

Kevin

didn't have cream cheese or sour cream - substituted with greek yogurt and it worked great! Recommend adding more cheese than called for

Test recipe

Used smoked paprika Make a day or days ahead. Flavor gets enhanced.
