this recipe

If you’ve been searching for a healthy ginger mocktail recipe you’re in luck. This delicious non-alcoholic co*cktail with ginger, cucumber and lime and mint is great during pregnancy or for an alcohol-free lifestyle.

Why This Recipe Works

This refreshing non-alcoholic ginger ale mocktail contains fresh ginger which benefits both yourbody and brain. You’ll love this ginger mocktail recipe because its:

  • Healthy: ginger is high in gingerol which has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Lime juice adds a Vitamin C hit, whilst cool cucumber and mint make for a refreshing mocktail that’s easy to drink.
  • Pretty: my ginger mojito mocktail gets its gorgeous shade of green from the grated cucumber. Fresh mint leaves and lime rounds make the perfect garnish for this super refreshing drink.
  • Low in sugar: mocktails with ginger ale are naturally sweet. In this recipe, the sweet ale makes up for the absence of fruit. Choose a low sugar or sugar-free variety to keep the sugar content down.

Ingredients

This delicious ginger mocktail calls for easy to find ingredients. It’s a perfectly refreshing summer mocktail for the warmer months, but can be enjoyed year-round.

  • Ginger: fresh ginger is great for many reasons. It’s loaded with nutrients and bioactive compounds. It is also high in gingerol, which is known to assist digestion, lower blood sugar and improve heart disease risk factors. Plus, it’s been linked to reducing symptoms of osteoarthritis. Honestly, it’s one of the very few superfoods that are actually worthy of the term!

Select a fresh hand of ginger that’s a little bigger than what you’ll need. This will allow you to grate it easily. It’s the hero of this ginger mocktail, so don’t try and substitute for bottled or pregrated ginger. It’s just not the same!

  • Lime juice: fresh lime juice perfectly balances the spicy ginger and sweetness of the ginger ale. You’ll get the most out of limes that are soft to the touch. If you can’t find fresh limes, bottled juice works too. Keep in mind that lime juice loses a little of its tang in processing.
  • Ginger ale: would you be surprised to know that many ginger ales on the market don’t contain ginger? A quality ginger ale contains ginger root and has an earthy richness that artificial flavorings can’t compete with. It’s the key flavor in a ginger mojito mocktail, so it’s worth searching for a brand that will do your mocktail justice.

Looking for greater depth of flavor? Unlike some mocktails with ginger ale, ginger beer is a great substitute in this recipe. Like the ale, pick a ginger beer that is brewed with ginger root. Look for a low or no sugar option for a healthier choice.

Equipment You’ll Need

It takes a little love to unleash ginger’s spicy goodness, so make sure you have these essentialtools on hand for the most delicious ginger mocktail around.

  • Fine grater: fresh ginger is the hard root of the ginger plant, so it doesn’t give up its juice easily. A fine grater will make light work of the ginger root and allow you to extract the juice when it comes to straining more easily. A gauge similar to what you’d use for zesting citrus is ideal.
  • Strainer: a fine mesh strainer works best. It will allow you to apply pressure to the ginger, cucumber and lime mix and obtain the most juice. In this recipe, the strainer acts in place of a co*cktail shaker to mix the ingredients as the ginger needs a firm press to release its juice. I found that a co*cktail shaker didn’t extract the juice as effectively and left many of the nutrients behind.

How To Make A GingerMocktail

  1. Grate ginger into a bowl.
  2. Next, grate the cucumber into the same bowl. Make sure all the delicious cucumber juice goes into the bowl too!

4. Add lime, then muddle gently. Strain the mixture into your glass. You might need to use the back of a spoon or your fingers to press the mixture against the sieve. Try to extract as much of the liquid as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ginger beer and ale?

Ginger beer is traditional brewed (like a beer) using real ginger. It’s a bubbly drink with a spicyfinish. Years ago, it was an alcoholic beer, but today’s ginger beer is alcohol-free.
Ginger ale has a mild, mellow flavor. It’s also sweeter than ginger beer. Ginger ale is more like a ginger-flavored carbonated soda. It’s also non-alcoholic.

What should fresh ginger look like?

Fresh ginger is essential for a delicious ginger mocktail. Look for pieces with a brown outerlayer and a yellow to tan inner flesh. The outside, including where it’s been cut, may look dull. However, its beautiful color is hidden inside.

Ginger is at its best when firm and taut with a bright inner flesh. Look for pieces that have minimal dry spots. If the ginger is looking shrivelled, dried out or has soft spots, it’s a sign that it’spast its prime.

How long does fresh ginger last?

Fresh, unpeeled ginger lasts up to two months in the fridge. Peeled ginger will only last about threeweeks, so only peel as much ginger as you need. Chances are you’ll end up with some leftovers,so store them in your vegetable crisper, ready to make this ginger mocktail recipe again!

Expert Tips

  • Prefer a deeper flavor? Just omit the club soda and use double the ginger ale. If you really love ginger, try using ginger beer instead.
  • Use a fine grater to grate your ginger if you have one. It’s easier to extract the juice from smaller pieces.
  • Did you know that muddling mint can create a bitter taste? Clapping the mint in your hands instead of muddling will ensure just enough flavor is released, with no bitterness.

Notes

When grating your ginger and cucumber, try to make sure all the juice goes into the bowl - this is where the delicious flavors and health benefits come from.

If you prefer a stronger ginger flavor, skip the soda water and use all ginger ale. You could even use ginger beer instead of ginger ale if you prefer.

For a low sugar option, use diet ginger ale.
