It’s never too early to start thinking about Christmas, and with Thanksgiving just behind us, we don’t have much time. I don’t know about you, but this time of year there are a ton of people I like to givebaked goodsto. Usually it’s a bag of cookies orChocolate Caramel Bark, with some pecan pralines, but this year I’m giving this creamy delicious homemade peppermint fudge.

If you want a mini treat full of nuts, then you’ll want to try some mini pecan pie tarts.

Different types of fudge

There are hundreds of types of fudge out there but most are adaptations of these:

The recipe is fool proof and you can make it in about 15 minutes. Much quicker than a batch of cookies, but you don’t get instant gratification, they have to sit for four hours.

I use marshmallows and dark chocolate for this easy chocolate fudge recipe. While it’s sweet, it’s not “sweetened condensed milk” sweet. You can use milk chocolate if you prefer, just try to use a good quality chocolate since that’s the main ingredient.

Why you’ll love peppermint fudge

  • A decadent fudge is a must have to enjoy around Christmas time.
  • It makes a thoughtful gift that’s easy to make!
  • Put together in just 15 minutes
  • You can add nuts and other toppings to the fudge to make other flavor batches

What you’ll need

  • Bittersweet chocolate – get the good stuff!
  • Evaporated milk – this shelf stable milk has about 60% of its water removed and is creamier so good for baking
  • Candy canes – crush them into pieces to top the fudge to make it extra festive
  • Peppermint extract – It doesn’t take much to give your fudge the mint flavor you’re looking for
  • Marshmallows – get the regular large ones (not the extra large ones used for s’mores)
  • Brown sugar, butter

What’s the best chocolate to use for Christmas fudge

When making a dessert like fudge where the main ingredient is chocolate, you should use the best quality chocolate in your budget. This recipe calls for bittersweet chocolate and my favorite is Guittard. If not available then you can’t go wrong with Ghirardelli. If you are feeling extravagant, everyone raves about Valrhona but I’ve never tried it.

How do you make peppermint fudge

Step 1: Bring sugar, butter and evaporated milk to a boil in a saucepan and then reduce the heat and cook until it reaches 234º or until it starts to get foamy.

Step 2: Remove from the heat and add chopped chocolate and marshmallows and whisk it together until it’s smooth. It will take a couple of minutes for the marshmallows to melt. Add peppermint extract and pour it into a pan to cool.

Step 3: For a bit more peppermint taste and a festive finish, crush up some candy canes or peppermint candies and sprinkle them on your warm chocolate pressing them in a bit so they don’t fall off once it’s cool.

You’ll need to let this fudge cool for about two hours and then refrigerate for two more hours before cutting.

Pro tip: You can leave out the peppermint and have plain fudge. For a different batch, try adding chopped up nuts or coconut to change things up a bit or buy some other flavored chips like peanut butter and sprinkle them on top before it sets.

That’s it! What could be easier?

It’s a great recipe to have on hand. I cut it into 1 inch pieces for a quick chocolate fix. It’s so rich, that’s about all you need.

Keep a batch or two in the freezer for a last minute hostess gift or gift for a special friend, or to enjoy after a busy day. This is going to make your holiday season just a little bit easier.

FAQs

How to gift fudge for Christmas? ›

Add a simple wooden or paper stick, some transparent gauze wrapping, a bow and a creative label to any piece of fudge, and you've now got something that looks more like an expensive candy apple than a humble square of fudge.

What makes fudge fudge? ›

Fudge is a dense, rich confection typically made with sugar, milk or cream, butter and chocolate or other flavorings. The base for fudge is boiled until it reaches the soft-ball stage (135 to 140 degrees F), then stirred or beaten as it cools to minimize the formation of sugar crystals.

Can you freeze homemade fudge? ›

Yes. Fudge can be frozen and most fudge recipes will freeze and thaw well. The texture of the fudge matters here; fudge with a denser texture tends to freeze better than fudge with a lighter texture. Freezing fudge can be a good option for long term storage as opposed to refrigeration.

What do you wrap fudge in for a gift? ›

Put parchment paper to good use with this idea for packaging edible gifts: Carefully wrap your favorite Christmas fudge inside a DIY parchment paper wrapping paper. Complete the rustic look by tying a twine ribbon adorned with a cheery candy cane.

Why is fudge unhealthy? ›

Fudge almost always has a pretty high sugar content as well as having some cream in it—both fattening. If you compare that to eating pure dark artisanal chocolate, it is a no-brainer. Dark chocolate of 70% cocoa or higher is considered a health food and often contains only two ingredients: cocoa and organic cane sugar.

When should you not make fudge? ›

Humidity can cause fudge to boil over in the pan or stay soft when set, so try to avoid working on humid days if at all possible. If waiting for a less humid day isn't feasible, you'll need to boil your fudge at a slightly higher temperature than usual — or just order some delicious fudge from Wockenfuss!

What is the best consistency for fudge? ›

Drop a piece of hot fudge into a glass filled with ice water. It should form a soft ball that can easily flatten between your fingers. Repeat this test every two minutes, each time using a clean spoon, until the fudge has the desired consistency.

Why should you not refrigerate fudge? ›

Fudge is best stored at room temperature for 2 to 3 weeks wrapped up in its original wax paper. NEVER REFRIGERATE your fudge as this will draw out the moisture and leave you with dry, crumbly fudge.

How do you know if fudge has gone bad? ›

If fudge experiences a change in temperature, it can melt or develop a slimy texture on the surface. If it is exposed to air, it can dry out and become hard. Specific add-ins to fudge have the potential to grow mold or give off a bad odor, and at that point, the fudge should be avoided.

Is it better to freeze or refrigerate fudge? ›

So to recap, it's best to store proper fudge at room temperature. Keeping it in the fridge takes out all its moisture, drying it out. Homemade fudge is best in the fridge. No matter where you store it, the goal is to protect the fudge from exposure to the elements so airtight containers are best!

How do you wrap Christmas fudge? ›

How to package it up. Cut your fudge into perfect creamy squares and then package them in tissue-lined tins and boxes to make them shine. Alternatively, for a small gift to hand out, try slicing your fudge into bars and wrapping each one up in a piece of cellophane.

How do you wrap individual fudge? ›

Because of the slightly moist consistency, it's best to wrap fudge squares individually in wax paper or plastic wrap as shown, but you could also store a single layer of fudge in an airtight container.

How do you send fudge? ›

Homemade fudge is wrapped in foil and wax paper to keep it fresh while shipping. Christmas cookie tins used to ship homemade treats. A simple, homemade gesture can go a long way — literally, almost 3,000 miles.

How do you package chocolate for Christmas? ›

Pack your chocolate in a box 2-3 times the size of their package. This will give you enough room for cushioning so the chocolates stay cool and intact. If your box is too tight, the chocolate is more likely to overheat. Avoid shipping chocolates that are not held inside a container, wrapper, or plastic bag.
